Obama drove a V8?

Under his veneer of soaring rhetoric, measured approach to politics and a penchant for “managing” difficult issues in Washington, US president Barack Obama is actually more of a “playa,” as we liked to say during my high school days. Part of my impression of him as a man is shaped by his photos as a thoughtful – and stylish – college student rocking a fedora and posing with a cigarette in his lips.

Perhaps more of his persona would be revealed if we knew what he drove before his run for president. I’ve always believed a person’s car choice says a lot about lifestyle, aspirations, how he or she see themselves, etc.

Before his meteoric rise to the white house from relative obscurity as a junior senator from Illinois, Obama’s choice of a daily-driven car was reportedly a 2005 Chrysler 300C with the monstrous 5.7L Hemi V8. The car is currently up for sale for $1 million on Ebay with its seller claiming to have Obama’s name on the car’s title as proof of authenticity.

Assuming the claim is legitimate, this opens a lot of doors into Obama’s persona beyond his political life. For one, though he may have the education and credentials of a blue-blood he has the taste of a common American, and given the choice of engine, some hot-blooded yearning for horsepower.

Admittedly, this doesn’t bode well for his credentials as an environmentalist.
